Rape
and sexual assault affect many people from different walks of life; male
and female, old and young, rich or poor, no matter your racial or ethnic
background. Without a doubt, life after a sexual assault is a very trying
time for the victim and those close to the victim. During this trauma,
victims deserve help and assistance.
The Shafer Center for
Crisis Intervention offers that support and assistance free of charge.
IF YOU ARE A VICTIM
OF SEXUAL ASSAULT....
- Get to a safe place
- Notify police immediately
- Call a friend, family member
or someone you trust
- Preserve all physical
evidence of the assault.
Do not shower, bathe, douche, or brush your teeth. Save or wear to the
hospital clothing worn at the time of the assault. If you feel you must
change, place everything including under and outer garments in PAPER
bags. This evidence is crucial in making a case against the attacker.
- Go to the hospital emergency department for a medical
exam. Even if you think you may not have physical injuries, there is
a risk of sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy.
- Request a urine sample if you believe you were given
a date-rape drug.
- Talk with a counselor who is trained to assist rape
victims.
